How Early Should You Send a Destination Wedding Invitation?
Save the date, main invitation, RSVP deadline, travel details and reminders. A clear timeline for destination weddings in India and abroad, so guests can actually make it.
For a wedding in your own city, an invitation six weeks ahead is usually fine. For a destination wedding, six weeks can be too late. Flights get expensive, leave is already planned, visa appointments are full and the hotel needs your room numbers yesterday.
So how early should you send a destination wedding invitation? The answer is: earlier than you think, and in stages. Here is a clear timeline for destination weddings within India and abroad.
Why destination weddings need more time
Your guests need to:
- Apply for leave from work, often weeks or months ahead
- Book flights or trains, ideally before prices rise
- Arrange visas for weddings abroad
- Plan childcare or school absences
- Budget for travel, stay and outfits for several functions
Meanwhile, you need confirmed numbers early for hotel room blocks, transfers and multi day catering. Sending early helps everyone.
The destination wedding invitation timeline
Six to eight months before: save the date
Send a save the date as soon as your date and destination are fixed. It should include:
- Your names
- The dates, including all days of celebration
- The destination city or venue
- A note that the formal invitation will follow
For weddings abroad, or peak season weddings in places like Goa and Udaipur, go closer to eight months. For destinations within India in quieter seasons, four to six months is often enough. A digital save the date is perfect here: quick to send, beautiful to open and easy to share with every guest. Browse our save the date designs.
Three to four months before: the main invitation
Send the full invitation with every function, the itinerary, accommodation details and the RSVP. This gives guests time to book travel at reasonable prices and gives you time to collect responses. Read How to Create a Destination Wedding Invitation With Travel Information for what to include.
Eight to ten weeks before: RSVP deadline
Set your RSVP deadline about two months before the wedding. Hotels and venues typically need final room and guest numbers several weeks ahead, so check your contracts and work backwards. Make the deadline clear in your message and invitation.
Six weeks before: follow ups
Follow up with anyone who has not replied. For destination weddings, a "Maybe" needs resolving early because it affects rooms and transfers. Read How to Handle Wedding Guests Who Don't Respond to Your RSVP.
Four weeks before: travel details
Share final logistics with confirmed guests: room allocations, pickup times, the detailed itinerary and contacts. With an invitation website, you can update the invitation itself and send a short message pointing guests to it.
One week before: reminder
Send a warm reminder with the invitation link, the weather forecast, packing tips and the first day's schedule.
The day before travel: final note
A short message with pickup details and a contact number for arrival day.

A sample message sequence
Save the date, eight months before: "Save the date! Riya and Arjun are getting married in Goa from 5th to 7th February 2027. Formal invitation with all the details to follow. Start planning your leave! 🌴"
Main invitation, four months before: "Here is our invitation with the full itinerary, hotel details and travel information. Please RSVP on the link by 1st December so we can confirm your room."
Follow up, six weeks before: "Hi Ankit! Just checking if you'll be joining us in Goa. We're finalising rooms this week, so a quick RSVP on the invite would be wonderful."
Travel details, four weeks before: "Your room is confirmed! The invitation now has pickup times and the full schedule. Please send us your flight details if you haven't yet."
Reminder, one week before: "One week to go! Weather looks perfect: sunny days, breezy evenings. Don't forget sunscreen and comfortable sandals. See you in Goa!"
What if you are running late?
If your planning has run behind and the wedding is only a couple of months away, do not panic. Send the main invitation immediately, combine the save the date and invitation into one message, set a firm RSVP deadline and follow up personally with everyone important. A digital invitation can go out within a day or two, which makes a late start much easier to recover from.
Special considerations
Peak wedding season
November to February is peak wedding season in India. Hotels in popular destinations fill quickly and flights are expensive. Send earlier than usual.
Festivals and holidays
If your wedding falls near Diwali, Christmas or New Year, guests' travel costs rise and leave is harder to get. Give extra notice.
Visas
For weddings abroad, check visa requirements for your guests' passports. Some visas take weeks. Mention it on the save the date: "Please check visa requirements early. We are happy to provide invitation letters."
NRI guests coming to India
If your wedding is in India but many guests are abroad, treat it like a wedding abroad from their perspective, and send early. Read International Wedding Invitations: How to Make Them Easy for Every Guest.
Why digital helps with destination timelines
Sending in stages means sharing information several times. A digital invitation makes this easy:
- Save the date first, then the full invitation, both in a matching design
- Update the same link as travel details are confirmed, rather than sending new files
- Collect RSVPs with a live head count for the hotel
- Reach every guest instantly, wherever they are in the world
Our Premium plan includes a matching save the date page with your invitation. See the plans page.
Questions couples ask us

Yes. With an invitation website, you can add or update travel details later on the same link.
When should the RSVP deadline be?
About two months before the wedding, depending on when your hotel needs final numbers.
