Luxury vs Premium Digital Wedding Invitations: What's Actually Different?
Everyone calls their invitations premium or luxury. Here is what actually separates the two: design process, customisation, illustration, languages, service and price.
Browse any wedding invitation website and you will see the words "premium" and "luxury" everywhere. Premium templates, luxury designs, premium luxury collections. After a while, the words stop meaning anything. So what is actually different between a premium invitation and a luxury one, and which do you need?
This post explains the real differences between luxury vs premium digital wedding invitations, based on how they are made, what they include and what you get for the price. We will use our own plans as examples, but the principles apply anywhere.
The short answer
A premium invitation is a professionally designed template that is personalised to your wedding: your colours, your fonts, your music, your photos and your details. A luxury invitation is designed from a blank page specifically for you: a unique layout, custom illustration, bespoke details and a designer working with you one to one.
Premium is tailoring a beautiful ready made outfit to fit you perfectly. Luxury is couture, made from scratch to your measurements.
Difference 1: The starting point
Premium starts from an existing design. The layout, structure and animations have already been created and tested. Your designer adapts them to your wedding.
Luxury starts from your story. The designer asks questions, understands your wedding and family, and creates a design that did not exist before. Read How to Create a Wedding Invitation Around Your Couple's Story to see what that process looks like.
Difference 2: Customisation
Premium customisation typically covers:
- Colours matched to your wedding theme
- Fonts adjusted to suit your style
- Your choice of background music
- Your photos, wording and events
- Usually one or two language versions
Luxury customisation includes all of that, plus:
- A layout designed around your content
- Custom illustration of the couple, venue or a meaningful place
- Bespoke motifs, crests or monograms
- A unique opening animation
- As many language versions as you need
- Themed formats like newspaper, magazine or cinematic invitations
Difference 3: Illustration
This is often the most visible difference. Premium invitations use the template's existing artwork, adjusted in colour. Luxury invitations include original illustration: a watercolour of your palace venue, a miniature painting style portrait of the two of you, a hand drawn map of your love story. Illustration is what makes an invitation look like no other.
Difference 4: Service
Premium: you fill in your details, see an instant preview and confirm on WhatsApp. A designer personalises your invitation and you receive a set number of revision rounds.
Luxury: a personal designer works with you directly, often on WhatsApp, from first idea to final version, with more revision rounds and more back and forth.
Difference 5: Time
Premium invitations can be ready quickly, often within a day or two, because the design foundation already exists. Luxury invitations take longer, typically a few days, because every element is created for you.
Difference 6: Price
Unsurprisingly, luxury costs more, because it involves more design time, illustration and service. As an example, here is how our plans compare:

|---|---|---|---|

Which one do you need?
Choose premium if...
- You have found a template you love and want it in your colours
- You want your own music, a bigger gallery and two languages
- You want a beautiful, polished invitation quickly
- You would rather put more of your budget elsewhere
Choose luxury if...
- You want an invitation that is completely unique
- You want a custom illustration or a themed format
- You are planning a grand, multi day or destination wedding with many functions
- You need more than two languages
- You value working closely with a designer
Same wedding, two approaches
To make the difference concrete, imagine one wedding: a December celebration at a heritage hotel in Jaipur, with Mehendi, Sangeet, the wedding and a reception.
The premium approach
The couple chooses a royal maroon template they love. The designer adjusts the colours to the dusty pink and gold of their decor, changes the fonts to suit, adds their favourite song as background music, a cover photo and twelve gallery photos, and creates a Hindi version for family and an English version for friends. A matching save the date goes out first. The result is elegant, personal and ready in a day or two.
The luxury approach
The couple tells their designer about the hotel, their families and how they met. The designer creates a new layout around the hotel's carved arches, paints an illustration of the courtyard at dusk, hand draws a monogram combining both families' initials and designs an opening where the hotel's doors swing open. Each function gets its own illustrated card. Versions are made in Hindi, English and Marathi for the groom's grandparents. The result is entirely unique, created over a few days of conversation.
Both invitations are beautiful. One is a polished personalisation, the other a one of a kind creation. The right choice depends on what matters most to you.
A common misconception
Many couples assume luxury always looks better. Not necessarily. A carefully chosen premium template, matched to your wedding colours, with great photos and elegant wording, can look every bit as refined as a custom design. Luxury is about uniqueness and service, not automatically about beauty. Read what makes an invitation look expensive to understand why.
Questions to ask any invitation provider
When a website says "premium" or "luxury", ask:
- Is the design a template or made from scratch?
- What exactly can be customised?
- Is illustration included?
- How many revisions are included?
- Will I work with a designer directly?
- How many languages are supported?
- How long does it take?
- Does it include RSVP, maps and updates?
The answers will tell you far more than the label. See also How to Choose the Right Digital Wedding Invitation Platform.
