10 Wedding Invitation Themes Inspired by Your Love Story

Met in college? On a train? Over chai at the office? Ten wedding invitation themes built around how you met, where you travelled and what you love together.

Most invitation themes start with a colour or a style. Royal. Floral. Minimal. They are lovely, but they could belong to any couple. The most memorable invitations we have designed started somewhere else entirely: with the story of how two people found each other.

A theme inspired by your love story does not mean writing your whole history on the invitation. It means choosing one thread from your story, the place you met, the thing you both love, the journey you took, and weaving it through the design. Here are ten love story wedding invitation themes to spark ideas, and how to bring each one to life on a digital invite.

How to find your theme

Sit together with a cup of chai and answer these questions:

  • Where did you meet?
  • What was your first date?
  • What do you always do together?
  • Where have you travelled together?
  • What song, film, book or food is "yours"?
  • What do your friends always tease you about?

Somewhere in those answers is your theme. Usually it is the answer that makes you both laugh.

1. The college romance

Met in a lecture hall, a library or the canteen? Design the invitation like a college notebook: ruled lines, doodles in the margins, a timetable for the wedding functions ("Period 1: Haldi. Period 2: Mehendi. Lunch break: compulsory."). The opening could be a notebook flipping open. Name tags styled as student ID cards make the couple's introduction fun.

Best for: Sangeet and friends' invitations, or the full invitation for a younger crowd.

2. The travel map

For couples who fell in love while travelling, or who have explored many places together, a travel theme is perfect. A vintage map with a dotted line tracing your journey, from the city where you met to the city where you are marrying. Event cards styled as boarding passes or luggage tags. Stamps from places you have visited. Read our opening ideas for a boarding pass reveal.

Best for: destination weddings and couples with a long distance past.

3. The office love story

Many Indian couples meet at work, and an office theme can be hilarious. Design the invitation like a company memo: "Subject: Merger Announcement." The couple as "Head of Department" and "Senior Manager". A "meeting schedule" for the functions. An "out of office" message for the honeymoon. Keep it light enough that elders understand the joke.

Best for: friends' and colleagues' invitations, receptions.

4. Chai and coffee

Did your first date happen over cutting chai at a tapri or a cappuccino at a café? A warm, cosy theme with chai glasses, coffee cups, steam swirls and warm brown and cream colours. "Two cups, one love story." The menu for the reception can even be styled as a café menu card.

Best for: intimate weddings, small celebrations and cosy winter receptions.

5. Cricket

For couples who bonded over cricket, or whose first argument was about Dhoni versus Kohli. A scoreboard showing "Bride's side vs Groom's side", functions listed as match fixtures, the couple introduced as "Captain" and "Vice Captain", and the wedding announced as "the final". It is a crowd favourite with relatives too.

Best for: Sangeet invitations and fun main invitations for cricket loving families.

6. Books and stories

Met at a bookshop, or both love reading? The invitation opens like a hardbound book, with chapters for each part of your story: "Chapter 1: The Meeting. Chapter 2: The Proposal. Chapter 3: The Wedding." Functions become chapters too. Vintage paper textures and classic serif fonts complete the look.

Best for: elegant main invitations and literary couples.

7. Music and the song that started it all

If a song is at the heart of your story, the first one you danced to, the one playing when you met, build the theme around it. A vinyl record or cassette tape opening, lyrics woven into the design and the song as background music. We explore this fully in Music Inspired Wedding Invitations: 10 Creative Ways to Use Your Couple Song.

Best for: any invitation, especially Sangeet.

8. Your city

For couples rooted in one city, celebrate it. Mumbai's local trains and sea face, Delhi's monuments and winter fog, Ahmedabad's pols and kites, Kolkata's trams, Bengaluru's gardens. A hand drawn skyline or city landmarks, with your love story spots marked on a little map, make the invitation feel deeply personal.

Best for: hometown weddings and couples who grew up together.

9. The arranged marriage that became love

Many couples meet through families, and their story is just as lovely. A theme built around the families coming together: two family trees joining in the middle, two houses connected by a path of marigolds, or the classic "first meeting" over chai and samosas at home, told with affection and humour. "It started with a biodata. It ended with forever."

Best for: traditional families who still want a personal touch.

10. Your pet

If your dog or cat is the third member of your relationship, give them a starring role. An illustration of your pet in a tiny sherwani or lehenga as the "ring bearer" or "chief guest", inviting guests in their own words: "My humans are getting married. Please come." Guests adore this.

Best for: playful invitations, save the dates and friends' versions.

Bringing a theme to life on a digital invitation

A digital invitation gives you more ways to express a theme than paper ever did:

  • The opening: a notebook, a book, a boarding pass, a record or a scoreboard can open the invitation.
  • The music: a song that fits the theme, like your song or a cricket anthem.
  • The event cards: styled as timetables, fixtures, chapters, boarding passes or memos.
  • The gallery: photos from the places and moments in your story.
  • The RSVP: renamed to suit the theme, like "Book your seat" or "Confirm your boarding".

Keep the details clear

A theme is the fun. The details are the job. Whatever theme you choose, make sure:

  • Dates, times and venues are always easy to find and read
  • Every event has a working map button
  • Elders can still understand who is getting married and when
  • The formal family invitation is included somewhere, if your family wants it

If the theme is very playful, consider two versions: a themed one for friends and a traditional one for relatives.

Themes that work for traditional families

Not every love story theme needs to be playful. Some work beautifully even for very traditional families:

  • The city theme, with landmarks from your hometown, feels nostalgic and dignified.
  • The families coming together, with two family trees joining, honours elders while telling your story.
  • The book theme, with chapters for each ritual, is elegant enough for any guest.
  • The travel map, showing the journey from two hometowns to one wedding venue, is lovely for intercity marriages.

Pair any of these with a shloka at the top and the traditional family section, and you have an invitation that is personal and respectful at once.

Combining a love story theme with a classic style

If you love a royal or floral design but also want to hint at your story, you do not need a full theme. A single touch can be enough:

  • A small illustrated map of where you met, inside an otherwise classic invitation
  • Your song as the background music
  • A one line story under the names: "From a college canteen in Pune to a mandap in Jaipur."
  • A photo from your first trip together in the gallery

Questions couples ask us

Can you design a fully themed invitation based on our story?

Yes. Our Royal plan designs your invitation from a blank page, including a custom illustration, so any of these themes can be created especially for you. See the plans page.

Will elders understand a themed invitation?

Most will enjoy it, especially if the details remain clear. For very traditional families, a traditional version alongside the themed one works well.

Can we use a theme only for the Sangeet?

Absolutely. Function invitations are a perfect place for playful themes. See our Sangeet designs.

How do we choose between several themes?

Pick the one that makes you both smile most, and that your closest friends would instantly recognise as "so you".

Your story, your theme

The best wedding invitation themes are not found on Pinterest. They are found in your own story. Choose one thread, weave it through the design and keep the details clear. Explore our designs for a starting point, or tell us your story on WhatsApp and we will suggest a theme.
